By the beginning of the Second World War, more than fifty feature films were shot in Dubrovnik and its surroundings, produced by Hungarian, German, Austrian, Czechoslovakian and Polish companies. The book Dubrovnik as a film backdrop explores in detail this exciting and little-known segment of the history of cinematography in Croatia, questioning the biographies of the people who made these films, the reasons why they chose Dubrovnik for their filming, the circumstances in which they worked there, thematic and aesthetic characteristics and the critical reception and place of their films in the context of national cinematography, as well as the reactions they encountered in Dubrovnik and the wider Croatian and Yugoslav environment. The author's field of special interest is the role of Dubrovnik in these films, which includes identifying the locations of their filming and questioning the way in which Dubrovnik's urban and natural environments were thematized and contextualized within the film narrative.

Relying on a variety of sources, from archival documents and professional or publicist books and works to old newspapers and magazines, during the research the author tried to find all the films that he knew or assumed were shot in Dubrovnik, which led him to the discovery of the oldest surviving feature films shot in the territory of today's Republic of Croatia.
