Summary

Tomislav Čegir: Film spaces

The author examines the Croatian genre film according to the criteria/patterns of the genre film based in (dominant) American cinematography. At the same time, in the context of the study of qualitative agreement with world tendencies, Čegir observes a marked individuality in Croatian directors in the reconstruction of established American genre conventions, as well as adaptation to the existing Croatian reality matrix. The most frequently exploited genre choices in domestic cinematography are film noir, western, gangster film, romantic comedy, i.e. melodrama, crime film, war film, etc. As interpretive models in considering Croatian genre variations, Čegir uses nine films from Croatian cinematography ("Crime in the School", "Convicted", "Diploma for Death", "Stela", "Time of the Warrior", "Three Men of Melita Žganjer", "Red Dust", "Watermelon Road", "Living and dead"), part of which was created in the 80s of the last century (during Yugoslavia), and part in the period of the independent state of Croatia. Considering the genre diversity of each of the directors, Čegir decided on only one film of each of them - the one that most clearly corresponds to one of the individual genres or subgenres.
