Summary

Joseph R. Roach: The Passions of Acting: Studies in the Science of Acting

The American theater theorist Joseph R. Roach's book “The Passions of Acting” is a landmark contribution not only to theaterology but also to the role that the science of acting has taken in the entire history of ideas. Implicitly refuting today's widespread thesis that acting is an art that does not have its own aesthetic history, and that the phenomenon of acting is difficult, if not impossible, to grasp with a systematic methodological apparatus and terminological instruments, the author of this book offers a historical review and a designed theoretical discussion of the key acting manuals, apologies, aesthetic and phenomenological writings on acting, since the 17th century, when it managed to reach the status of a recognized professional and artistic autonomous activities, up to the first half of the 20th century.

The breadth of the context within which the theory of acting is expertly placed in this book includes both medical and philosophical discussions of the individual historical periods it deals with, reaching into the areas of knowledge of the physiological and psychological mechanisms of the functioning of the human body, namely the fundamental instrument, material and medium of acting expression. Thus, it is shown that diverse discursive practices have formulated historical conceptions of human "nature", influencing at the same time the formulation of actors' normative or descriptive poetics. However, it is not a question of one-way influences, so the theories of acting are also manifested as equal and in some cases counterproductive impulses in different historical stages of philosophical, natural scientific, medical, especially psychophysiological articulations of ideas about man and his fundamental mode of existence, embodiment.
