Summary
Ognjen Obradović: Witnesses of the Last Days
What does the theater do when the world is falling apart? Does it keep silent, look away - or does it become a place of testimony? The study Witnesses of the Last Days by Ognjen Obradović takes us back to a decade in which history cruelly entered everyday life, and the scene became a space where people thought, remembered and resisted. At the center of this book is the Yugoslav Drama Theater - an institution whose name lives on as an apparition of the state and as a question addressed to the present. Following the plays created between 1991 and 1999, the author reveals a repertoire flow that did not agree to deny reality. Classical texts and contemporary drama here become ways of speaking about violence, loss and trauma, but also about the possibility of art to preserve ethical and political responsibility. Theater is seen not only as art, but as a meeting place of time, space and community - as a chronotope in which the spirit of the epoch is recognized. This book is not just a theatrical analysis of the scene and the decade. It is a record of generational confrontation, the heritage that shapes us and the belief that art can illuminate even the darkest historical moments. The witnesses of the last days talk about the past - but above all about our present.
