Summary

Gianni Rodari: Čipolino

translated by Ratko Zvrko

illustrated by Beata Bakša

The novel "Čipolino" is an imaginatively told story in which all roles are played by different types of fruit, vegetables or animals. The main character is the onion Čipolino (cipolla means onion in Italian), one of the eight sons of father Cipolon who was imprisoned because he inadvertently stepped on the foot of the merciless king Limun. Taught by his father's experience, Cipolino realizes that relations in the world are not fair, and values are not set as they are said to be, so it is not thieves and criminals who go to prison, but honest people, and those who should be worshiped, because of their noble birth and dignity, are greedy and merciless tyrants and do not deserve the respect of the people. Cipolino leaves his poor village and goes out into the world. He wants to meet and study scoundrels in order to know how to fight against them.
