Summary
Odysseus Elitis: Dostojno jest
The poem Dostojno jest (1959), Elitis' magnum opus on which he worked for eleven years, is one of the most significant texts of Greek literature of the 20th century. It was created as a poetic response to the trials and horrors of the Second World War, in which Elitis participated as a fighter on the Albanian front, the German occupation and the Greek civil war that followed soon after. The text is immersed in the poetics of European modernism, especially French poetry of which Elitis was a great connoisseur and admirer, but in the phase of its mature re-examination, when he rooted his writing deeper in the traditions of Hellenic natural philosophy, Platonism and metaphysical romanticism (including the extremely interesting figure of Dionysios Solomos, whose poetry is unfortunately poorly known outside the borders of Greece). Composer Mikis Teodorakis composed music for longer passages from the poem, and certain songs of his "folk oratorio", especially the fourth and sixth odes, are still widely popular in Greece today. The poem was awarded the Greek State Prize for Poetry and was translated into more than fifteen languages.
