Summary
Dobrica Ćosić: Fajka
A novel about the search for the future time.
The fantastic anti-utopian novel Fajka, set in the era of totalitarianism where freedoms were abolished and all values collapsed, announces the author's tragic sense of history and his own epoch. In the allegorical images of the destruction, absurdity and disintegration of human society, the hero of this not-at-all-fairy tale sees a threat to general and national progress: An anti-time, general chaos, a grotesque world order without a future has arisen. In the contract with the hero, the underwater Moravian devil Anđama will grant Ćosić's hero immortality and the power to find out "what no one has ever known" in exchange for the fate of mortals, in order to check whether God still exists here, in the real world.
