Summary

Aleksandar Sergeevich Pushkin: The Blizzard

The Blizzard is a famous and short story by the great Russian romantic Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin, written in 1830 as part of his famous cycle Belkin's Tales. The action of this exciting and melodramatic story revolves around the rich young heiress Maria Gavrilovna who falls madly in love with the poor military ensign Vladimir. Faced with the opposition of her parents, the young lovers decide to organize a secret night wedding in the village church. However, fate cruelly plays with their plans when a terrible, opaque snow blizzard rises on the appointed night. Vladimir gets completely lost in the storm and is late for the ceremony, while at the same time a lost and frozen military officer Burmin accidentally runs into the church. In the semi-darkness of the church, confused and half-conscious, the priest and Marija mistakenly perform a wedding with a stranger, after which Burmin runs away in a panic. Years later, after Vladimir dies in the war, fate reunites Maria and Burmin, who are attracted to each other without realizing at first that they are already married. In this masterpiece, Pushkin parodies romantic clichés about unrequited love and the forces of fate with a great deal of irony and charm. Through a simple style and quick plot twists, he creates a warm, dynamic and deep story about how coincidences, misconceptions and uncontrollable natural disasters can completely redirect and permanently seal people's lives.
