"It is the 16th century that is important for the development of the Croatian language," he said, adding that the Croatian language began to develop in the early Middle Ages (9th century) and followed a very clear course of development. He pointed out that the Church Slavonic language of the Croatian editorial office was the backbone of the development of the Croatian literary language, into which elements of the vernacular penetrated.
