Jacques Derrida: Truth in Painting
"Truth in Painting" (originally La vérité en peinture, 1978) is the key work of the French philosopher Jacques Derrida in which he applies the strategy of deconstruction to the field of aesthetics, art history and the theory of pictorial representation.
In this book, Derrida questions traditional philosophical authorities, dealing with the question of what constitutes a work of art and where art itself ends and its art begins. framework or context.
- The concept of parergon: The central theoretical contribution of the book. Parergon is what is outside the work (ergon), such as the frame of a picture, the clothes on a statue, or the columns of a building. Derrida proves that the frame is not just a neutral addition, but actively participates in creating the meaning of the work itself.
- Criticism of Kant: The author analyzes in detail Kant's Critique of the Power of Judgment, especially the idea of pure aesthetic judgment, showing how philosophy systematically tries to isolate art from external influences.
- Debate on Van Gogh's Shoes: The book contains a famous essay on the painting Shoes by Vincent van Gogh. Derrida enters into a polemic between the philosopher Martin Heidegger (who sees in the shoes the toilsome life of a peasant woman) and the art historian Meyer Schapiro (who claims that they are the shoes of a city artist). Derrida deconstructs both, showing that the truth about the image cannot be reduced to simple ownership of the object.
