At the very beginning of the book, Frankfurt answers the question that naturally arises: Why write an essay on branding? "One of the most striking features of our culture is that it abounds in bullying. Everyone knows it. We all contribute. But we take this situation for granted. (...) Therefore, we do not have a clear idea of what bullying is, why there is so much of it and what its function is. We lack a consciously developed understanding of the importance of bullying.
