Summary
Rene Grousset: Empire of the Steppe
Attila, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane... their names are mentioned in all historical records. The stories of Western chroniclers, as well as Chinese and Persian chroniclers, spread the word about them far and wide. These famous barbarians appear in historical times, in the full swing of civilization, and in just a few years they turn the entire Roman, Iranian and Chinese world into a heap of ruins. Their arrival, action and disappearance seem inexplicable to that extent, therefore even positivist history shows a tendency to agree with old writers who saw in them God's punishment addressed to old civilizations.
