Summary
Felix Naumovič Arski: Pericles
It was said that he "thunders and sows" when he speaks, or that he "carries terrible lightning on his tongue".
According to Thucydides, the main reason for his success was not his oratorical skill, but the reputation he gained through his modest way of life, as well as his incorruptibility and that, regardless of the power he had, "his property, which his father left, he did not increase it by a single drachma."
He focused all his strength and reputation on making Athens the leading state of the Hellenic world. In this name, he completely devoted himself to state affairs, refused invitations to parties and lived modestly, with the means necessary for family life.
The Athenians respected him because he provided them with a comfortable life and increased his influence and fame in the Hellenic world.
