Ostrogorski Georgije

Summary

Georgije Ostrogorski: Economy and Society in the Byzantine Empire

Georgije (Georgije) Ostrogorski is a Russian Byzantologist who spent most of his working life in Yugoslavia. He was born in 1902 in Saint Petersburg, where he graduated from the classical high school, but he emigrated with his family shortly after the October Revolution. He studied sociology and philosophy in Heidelberg and Paris, but was also interested in economic history and classical archaeology. He received his doctorate in Breslau (today Wrocław in Poland), where he then taught Byzantine history. In 1933, he moved to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, where he taught history at the University of Belgrade until his retirement in 1973.

After the Second World War, he became a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) and founded the Byzantine Institute in Belgrade. Under his leadership, Belgrade grew into one of the world's leading centers of Byzantine studies. He gained honorary membership in scientific institutions in many European countries as well as numerous orders for scientific work.

His area of scientific interest was the economy, politics, culture, religion and society of the Byzantine Empire throughout almost all periods of its history, with a focus on interaction with the South Slavs. He was particularly interested in economic relations in the countryside, the development of Byzantine feudalism and the Byzantine state ideology. His most important work, History of Byzantium (originally German Geschichte des byzantinischen Staates) has been translated into more than 10 languages and is still one of the fundamental books in the field of Byzantology, according to many the most comprehensive overview of Byzantine history in one book. Ostrogorski died in Belgrade in 1976.
