Summary

Eliezer Papo: Struggle, Spirit and Survival

Dr. Eliezer Papo's book *Struggle, Spirit and Survival – Partisan Haggadah: a unique Passover parody from the time of the Holocaust* brings the previously unpublished text of the Partisan Haggadah by Shani Altarc, an exceptional example of Sephardic satire (a parody of the Passover Haggadah) - a genre that is almost unknown in our country. The first version of Altarč's text was created in the spring of 1944 in the free territory of Lika, Kordun and Bania for Jewish refugees who found themselves under the protection of partisan detachments; therefore, that text actually represents our first known war *stand-up* performance (long before that genre got its name). It is a very short, but extremely hermetic and trilingual text (Altarac writes in a mixture of Serbo-Croatian, Hebrew and Jewish-Spanish, i.e. Ladin) of exceptional literary value. In this sense, the expert contribution of Dr. Papa is valuable not only in the literary and theoretical but also in the linguistic aspect, as it enables the deciphering of the enigmatic text that was originally intended for the participants of the described events.
