Jean Delumeau: Sin and Fear I-II

One might think that a civilization - the Western one from the 14th to the 18th century - which saw (or considered) itself beset by many enemies - Turks, idolaters, Jews, heretics, witches, etc. - had no time for self-observation. At first glance, that would be logical. However, the exact opposite was happening. The siege mentality, discussed in the previous book (Fear in the West), was accompanied in European history by a heavy sense of guilt, moral conscience and, as never before, a sinking into oneself. On a collective level, the "disease of scruple" was born in the 14th century, which then spread. It was as if the anger that was flaring up against the enemy of the Christian name did not abate in these continuous and so diverse struggles. The general sea that fragmented into "named" fears revealed a new enemy and a new fear in every inhabitant of the besieged city - fear of oneself. Expressing the feelings of the entire church, Lefèvre d'Etaples explained the Epistle to the Galatians like this: "If you look closely, the life of a Christian in this world is nothing but a continuous war..."
