The Turks are an ancient people, and the Ottomans are only their branch. The forefather Turk (Türk) seems to be Herodotus' Targitaos and Togarma from the Bible. The Turks, whom the Chinese called Tuku, came down from Altai, i.e. the Golden Hill, near the Byzantines of Ektag. It is a vast fertile steppe country of the Asian plateau, bounded by Hatay to the east, i.e. northern China, western Aral Lake and the country of Kharizm, northern Siberia, and southern Tibet. It is a country known since ancient times for its pastures, for musk from Taras, for bows from Tšatsh (Tashkent), for the breed of its horses, etc. The old Persians, who called their own country Iran, and everything else, as its opposite, Aniran, i.e. non-Iran, called the eastern countries on the other side of the Oxus, namely today's Turkistan, Turan, and the name Turanians, i.e. Turks, was a collective name, like the name for the Scythians, which signified cruelty and savagery in opposition to education and culture.
