Markovina Dragan

Summary

Dragan Markovina: Between red and black: Split and Mostar in the culture of memory

The author explores the emergence of historical revisionism on the example of the cities of Mostar and Split. In the 1990s, new political subjects constructed desirable historical memories with the aim of creating new state and national identities. The key intention of that policy was to completely dismantle the socialist heritage, while reaching for the "inventing of tradition" and the negation of a part of the important cultural and historical heritage. The nationalist policy of the new elites led to a series of unfavorable consequences, such as the demolition of monuments to the anti-fascist struggle, changing the names of streets, changes in the contents of school textbooks on history and literature, changing the names and symbols of sports clubs, etc. The book is written in a critical-polemical tone. The author is a historian, assistant professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Split.
