Jules Michelet, verojatno najveći francuski povijesničar, rodio se u Parizu 21. kolovoza 1798. u hugenotskoj obitelji. The son of a small-scale printer, from his early days he helped his father in his hard work, in a basement on St. Martin's Boulevard. Od malena su roditelji uočili njegovu izuzetnu bistrinu, tako da su ga, iako na tankoj zaradi, 1812. dali u Licej Karla Velikog gdje je postigao briljantan uspeh. As early as 1821, he became a professor of history and for the next five years taught at several schools and institutions of the time. At that time, he translated the Principles of the Philosophy of History of Čanbatista Vik and wrote a Brief Overview of Modern History.
