Summary
Culture of Remembrance of the War and Postwar Victims of the Bleiburg Tragedy and the Way of the Cross of the Croatian Nation
The collection of papers includes part of the presentation from the scientific-professional symposium "Culture of Remembrance of the War and Postwar Victims of the Bleiburg Tragedy and the Way of the Cross of the Croatian Nation", which was held on October 29 and 30, 2024 in Zagreb.
The collection contains fourteen articles, eight of which are scientific, four professional papers and two essays. They cover a wide range of topics from 1944 to the time of the symposium in 2024. The works cover the communist crimes committed against Croats, Serbs and Montenegrins before the end of the war and in the immediate aftermath, as well as a view from the British perspective on the role of the British in the renditions of the May Days in 1945.
Next, a review of the commemoration of the Bleiburg tragedy and the attitude towards it in the organizations, societies and communities of Croatian political emigrants, as well as the activity of the Yugoslav secret service in preventing them. The texts also problematize various researches on the cemeteries of the victims of post-war massacres, then look back at the culture of memory of the victims of totalitarian movements and regimes, taking into account wider European practice and legislation. Furthermore, the attitude towards post-war communist crimes is debated with those who today are called anti-fascists, as is the latter term. The papers also focus on the role of the Catholic Church in commemorations, as well as the use of Croatian symbols on them, which is perhaps the most current topic related to commemorations in recent years.
Many documents from the state archives of Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia were used in the works, as well as the Croatian emigrant press, as well as relevant literature on the subject of the Bleiburg tragedy and post-war victims from Croatia and abroad, including those created during the activities of Croatian political emigrants abroad from 1945 to 1990.
