Summary

Dušan Žanko: Witnesses

Selected essays, views, memories

foreword: Zdravko A. Sančević

Prof. Dušan Žanko is a significant figure in the interwar and wartime period in Croatia and in the post-war Croatian emigration. He is usually said to be one of the prominent Croatian and Catholic intellectuals and public workers. But precisely because of this, a somewhat general view of Žanko, some of his important activities remain unknown, especially to the younger generations. The reason is long-term emigration and the silence in the homeland of everything creative and positive about people who were in opposite positions to the gloomy and sad present in Croatia; in positions of freedom for the Croatian people according to the current subordination; on the positions of pluralism and democracy according to the current dictatorship; on the positions of Christianity towards current atheism; on the positions of the spirit according to current materialism. When something was said about people like Žanko in post-war Croatia, it was negative, bad, ugly. That's why this book is being published, so that future generations can learn about Žanko and Žanko's work, but also about who and what kind of people were they, who stood on the aforementioned ramparts, what were their ideals and principles, what were they like as people.
However, the essays and articles collected in this book cannot give us a complete idea of Žanko the man, believer-Catholic, patriot and public worker, thinker, writer, man of the theater, university professor. The reason is that only some of his already published essays and articles are published in this book, so to speak, none of his theatrical and literary criticisms, reviews and evaluations and other articles. Likewise, none of his unpublished diaries, correspondence and lectures
