Mate Kovačević is a historian and journalist. A historian who recognizes historical twists and turns in daily political events and statements. A journalist who shapes Croatian political reality in real time, and does not present it post festum. Because he puts the depictions and evaluations of political statements and events in a historical context, his texts do not die at the end of the week but are a lasting testimony.
In the texts of Mate Kovačević there is no pettiness that adorns chroniclers, since the purpose of his texts is to anticipate the consequences of political events and their impact on future times with facts and quotes. There are no ideological preferences in his texts either, because his fundamental preoccupation is the fate of Croatia and the Croatian people. Therefore, the only thing that can be objected to the writer Mata Kovačević is that he bases his evaluations on a worldview centered on the well-being of the Croatian people and the future of Croatia.

However, publicist Mata Kovačević cannot be objected to "hate speech" either - which is an accusation of "political correctness" in defense of the current government - because he does not express negative evaluations about people, but about their actions and the consequences of their actions. As a witness of the times, Mate Kovačević does not shy away from appointing those responsible for anti-national and anti-Croatian politics, the policy of de-Germanization, since he cares about the historical truth. As a contemporary, he is imbued with a moral obligation to fight against injustice, lies and misinformation.
Previous assessments of Mata Kovačević as a historian, publicist and journalist are also confirmed in his latest book, Fifteen Dark Years (2000-2015). This can already be understood from the structure of the published texts: out of 89 texts composed in 18 chapters, only a part are works published in the weekly magazines Fokus, Hrvatsko slovo and Hrvatska gruda, and a number of works the author has previously presented at scientific meetings and round tables.
