"Passenger Traffic in Old Dubrovnik" is a major historiographical work by prominent historian Jorjo Tadić, published in 1939. year published by the Tourist Association in Dubrovnik. The book represents one of the first and most important scientific studies on the history of travel, early forms of tourism and social mobility in the area of the Republic of Dubrovnik.
The book is based on an extensive research of rich materials from the State Archives in Dubrovnik and analyzes in detail what the reception and movement of foreigners looked like in old Dubrovnik:
- The beginnings of tourism and catering: The work brings insight into the early forms of organized accommodation, hospices, boarding houses and the regulations by which the Republic of Dubrovnik regulated the stay of foreigners.
- Famous guests: Tadić describes the arrivals crowned heads, high church dignitaries, diplomats and merchants who visited the city.
- French and European travel writers: Special emphasis is placed on the records and impressions of foreign travel writers who visited and described Dubrovnik.
- Quarantine and health care: Security measures are also analyzed, including the operation of the famous Dubrovnik quarantine (infirmary) that controlled travelers to prevent the spread diseases.
