This collection of essays published over forty years, mainly in the editions of Matica Hrvatska in Petrinja, does not directly show the chronology of historical events, but it is conditioned by them.
Salopek talks about the state of culture in turbulent times. to which he himself is a witness and participant, about the states of mind in the immediate homeland and the wider Croatian space, about what, as culture, remains for the future, separates the ephemeral from the transient, provides benchmarks of duration.
From the era of the Croatian Spring, through the war period, the Homeland War and exile, then the challenge of Croatia's independence, to contemporary global changes and the city hit by an earthquake, the author's view does not lose its depth, sincerity and analysis. His reflections offer not only historical analysis, but also a human story.
Thematically it is focused on the local, native area of Petrin, but it positions it on the map of Croatia as a place of destiny.
He talks about the turbulence of events in that whirlwind, which we endure simultaneously in the center and on the edge of Croatia.
It bears witness to the cultural history of Petrin's homeland.
As the sociologist said in the editorial and the poet Ivan Rogić-Nehajev: "... adds another beautiful chapter to the imaginary great love story of a small Croatian city from the "frontline" of national and cultural resistance to the storm..."
