Summary
Aleksandar Ranković, Slavka Ranković: Serbia was a target
The fourth session of the CKSKJ, on July 1, 1966 in Brijuni, marked a turning point in the history of the second Yugoslavia. At the session, Aleksandar Ranković was politically liquidated, together with Edvard Kardelj, the closest associate of Josip Broz Tito. Ranković was dismissed under the accusation that he allegedly organized the sound system and eavesdropping on Tito and other leaders, that he fought for power and the place of Tito's successor in the position of the state in a conspiratorial and coup-like manner. He was found guilty of misusing the State Security Service, forming a factional group that prevented the development of self-government and the democratization of Yugoslav society. With this book, we return to Aleksandar Ranković and the Brijuni Plenum, although almost eight decades have passed since his departure. Why? Because that change was very significant, important for the future of Yugoslavia. Because almost only now are historians and political analysts recognizing what happened and how it played out. Because these findings are a mirror in which facts and actors are clearly seen and recognized, and this gives a new image and dimension to the "Rankovic case" and to that spectacular and unexpected party act, which took place on an isolated island at the top of the Adriatic. Simple: the truth is different.
