Summary

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer: Travelogues, Essays and Sketches

Alfonso X. of Castile, known as the Learned, left precious advice to his people in the 13th century: "Heat yourself with old wood, read old books, drink old wines, stick to old friends."
We have an "old book" in our hands! The reader can rightly ask why today, in our more than hectic time, he would read a book written in a peaceful, idyllic atmosphere from the beginning of the second half of the 19th century. Are there points of contact between the man of that era and today, between the then and contemporary literary creativity? Will the reader, when he closes the cover, be enriched with some new knowledge and truths about himself and the world he lives in? Will he be ennobled or will he just have the feeling that he just came out of some dusty museum, to which he was transported by a combination of circumstances in a paper time machine? To answer these questions, we must first determine what is meant by the "old book" that the Learned Alfonso was referring to. The answer is clear - it is a book whose freshness is confirmed by its duration...

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, the last troubadour of Spanish poetry and the first modernist, poet, storyteller, playwright, journalist, travel writer, painter and illustrator, is one of the brightest names of Spanish post-romanticism. These records were first published in the Madrid newspaper Comtemporaneo, where Bécquer was editor and regular columnist. Perhaps that is why the image of Spain at one point in time that the author conjures up for us exudes the liveliness, dynamism and interest that print as a medium requires. In addition to all that, giving them a note of humor, irony and self-irony, Bécquer introduced high standards of top poetic prose into journalistic writing.
