Dragutin Hirc: Old Zagreb II. Kaptol and Donji grad

Dragutin Hirc (1853-1921), is one of our most prolific and famous naturalists, scholars, florists, geographers and travel writers. His manuscript about his hometown was stored in the State Archives in Zagreb for many years, and thanks to the efforts of the editor, it was finally prepared for printing.

The work consists of a series of shorter, mostly rounded units of different genre characteristics. Describing the environments, social and cultural events, life and customs of famous personalities and numerous ordinary citizens of old Zagreb, Gradec, Kaptol and Donje grad, Hirc presents us with a layered and above all vivid picture of the city and its surroundings, which is why his manuscript belongs to those rare works that comprehensively record everyday culture within the history of the city of Zagreb.

Hirc's texts about Kaptol and Donje grad are printed in the second volume, attached is an article by Dragica Jerand published in "Hrvatski narod" in 1944, which alone, and in one place, provides all the relevant information about Hirč's life and work.
