Summary
Pavao Pavličić: Vukovar scrapbook
Once upon a time, scrapbooks were an everyday occurrence. People of that time were much more aware of their own transience than we are today, so they tried to preserve the memory of themselves and others. They would get some thick material (preferably bound in leather or silk and with some gold printing), and then they would ask friends, acquaintances and relatives to write in their scrapbook. And, they all did it very heartily and very seriously: they composed verses, wrote wise sayings, drew palm trees and sunsets, begging in their text the owner of the scrapbook never to forget them, just as they would never forget him.
At the same time, the person who wrote in the scrapbook did not care so much about leaving a trace of himself, as about expressing his feelings towards the owner of the scrapbook. All those verses, all the wise sayings and drawings, actually spoke about him, and that's how the owner of the notebook found out that he was loved and appreciated; and for the sake of such knowledge it was worth spending some money and effort on that notebook with gold printing.
I remembered that institution when Matica Hrvatska suggested to me that we make a selection from three of my books about Vukovar and thus compile something new and perhaps interesting. I imagined then that Vukovar is actually a person too, that he too is the owner of some kind of big scrapbook...
