Summary

Nada Hulina: Higher tree plants

Plants have fascinated me with their variety of shapes, colors and smells since I can remember. At school, I learned that "all the chemical factories of the world do not work as perfectly and precisely as one small plant, which our foot can recklessly trample on" and that the survival of life on Earth (nitrogen, carbon, oxygen and water cycle) is linked to plants. In addition, I was fascinated by the ambivalence of plants, the fact that many can be both useful and harmful, depending on how well we know them.

Plants have become the subject of my professional interest. As a long-time teacher at the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb (on the subjects Botany, Weeds, Honey Plants and Phytocenology), I have seen for myself that it is very difficult for students to learn the systematics of plants. Enumerating the scientific, Latin-Greek names of plants and the groups they belong to, as well as morphological data, especially about the number of flower parts, the type of flower and fruit, is extremely tedious for many students and they think that it makes no sense to remember it.

However, the systematics of plants should help us get to know the diversity of the plant world and thus learn to use and protect it, especially rare, endangered and endemic plants. That's why I decided to write a book in which I took that systematics as the basis for the economic significance of plants, which is actually the main preoccupation of agronomists.

Everything I learned about plants, collected in books and notes for decades, I had the need to translate into a text with the desire to make the reading interesting and useful to the reader.
