Summary
Francis Mark Mondimor: Bipolar Disorder
What is bipolar disorder, why is this disorder so difficult to recognize and how to live with it? What are the symptoms, forms and how is bipolar disorder diagnosed? How to get well and stay healthy? Why does bipolar disorder affect not only the affected person but also all family members? Will there ever be a real cure for this disorder? How to distinguish depression from bipolar disorder? Why do people stop drinking drugs and how to prevent relapse and repeat episodes of the disorder? Research shows that two percent of the population suffers from some type of bipolar disorder, and if milder forms were included, the figure would increase to five percent, while the average person visited 3.3 doctors before being properly diagnosed. Bipolar disorder is a genetic, hereditary disease and refers to a mood regulation disorder, so four abnormal mood states are distinguished: mania, clinical depression, hypomania and mixed mood states. Patients can suffer from three types of bipolar disorder: bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorder. The first steps towards successful treatment are acceptance of the diagnosis and commitment to treatment, which implies the so-called treatment tripod: drugs, various forms of psychotherapy and mood hygiene, i.e. lifestyle changes to reduce physical and psychological stress.
