Summary

Heinz Klippert: How to learn successfully in a team

From the introduction Working in a team does not just mean sitting together. First of all, teamwork means cooperating sensibly, following the rules, and concentrating on solving the task. Working in a team also means that students are directed to each other in the best possible way, that they support each other in learning. At the same time, teamwork requires working constructively in a way that leads to the goal and removing all unnecessary obstacles within the group. Therefore, regulations are needed, as well as observers. Furthermore, it is necessary to think about setting rules and sanctions for which the students are responsible. Teamwork cannot be ensured only with the help of group exercises and extensive explanations; it requires built-in rules, a flow and a routine of interactions. Our topic - team development - aims to create exactly that routine. We want to achieve a sensitive, but also routine shaping of the upcoming processes in the group. Since these team skills appear on their own in a small number of students, what is done in class must be practiced and determined through the so-called "learning by doing". Experience tells us that these abilities cannot be improved by the occasional use of group work on individual subjects. A systematic and intensive process of training and explaining is needed in as many subjects as possible, especially in basic subjects with a larger number of hours. The only problem is that few people in our schools feel competent for this job. (...) The most important part of this book is the second chapter. It will show numerous proven training methods that show how a team can be developed in the classroom. The presented exercises are grouped into four training stages. The first stage includes various exercises that will show students the importance of group work and strengthen their willingness to improve their own abilities to work in a group. At the center of the second stage are exercises that provide students with a variety of opportunities to (self-)critically analyze group processes and to think about it, and to begin to create ways of behaving in the class that are conducive to constructive group work.
