Summary

Ingrid Riedel: Mothers and daughters

A living myth The relationship between mothers and their daughters has always been complicated: it is characterized by intense feelings that last a lifetime. The ancient Greeks knew this too, and based several myths on this relationship. Ingrid Ridel finds a reflection of this dramatic event in the ancient myth about the goddess of agriculture Demeter and her daughter Persephone, who was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld. The theme of that myth is the intense grief of the mother goddess, whose anger withers all fertility and finally forces the male gods (Zeus) to return to the right path. Ingrid Riedel thoroughly examines the despair of an abandoned mother, but also shows that a fundamental meeting between mother and daughter is possible, which was celebrated in ancient times with the Eleusinian Mysteries. Relying on the research of Carl Gustav Jung and Karoly Kerenyi, Ingrid Riedel transfers mythical experiences to the present, trying to penetrate the nature of mother-daughter relationships through archetypal structures.  Demeter is described as a woman who keeps away from her male aspects: she lacks the elements that are essential to her brothers Zeus and Hades. To that extent, Demeter is the archetype of the mother, that is, the archetype of the Female. When, on the other hand, the archetype is singled out so cleanly, then it is possible, using the process developed by analytical psychology, to search for deep structures that are shaped by culture. What, however, makes this book by Ingrid Riedel so penetrating is that precisely in the contemporary forms of the mother-daughter relationship she reveals preserved mythical structures that, on the one hand, can have a liberating potential (when they become aware), but, on the other hand, not infrequently have the function of fetters (when they simply live, without reflection or resistance).
