Summary

Lucy Huskinson: Nietzsche and Jung - The Whole Self in the Unity of Opposites

The book Nietzsche and Jung is dedicated to the personalities and ideas of two icons of philosophical and psychological thought of the twentieth century, revealing an unusual connection between them.
By carefully examining their oeuvre, the work of Nietzsche and Jung manages to shed light on complex areas of Nietzsche's thought and resolve ambiguities in Jung's acceptance of Nietzsche's theories. Through an analysis of the place and role of opposites in the whole self as seen by Jung, the full extent of Nietzsche's influence can be seen. Supported by Jung's seminar on Nietzsche's Zarathustra, this rigorous and original analysis of Jung's theory and its philosophical roots leads to a new interpretation of the theories of both thinkers. Their shared model of the self will be put to the test, and each person's personality will be assessed against the mental health criteria set by the other, in an effort to determine whether Nietzsche and Jung were themselves whole.
Nietzsche and Jung's book shows how our understanding of analytical psychology can be enriched by examining its philosophical roots, asking whether a whole self is a realistic possibility for each of us. This reading will engage students of psychology, philosophy and religion as much as practicing Jungian analysts.
Lucy Haskinson teaches at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex. She has published articles in the Journal of Analytical Psychology and Harvest Journal for Jungian Studies.
