Summary
Paul Vitz: Psychology as a religion
Cult of self-worship
After behaviorism and psychoanalysis, a new vision of psychology called humanistic psychology spread in America and then in Europe. It is apparently more related than the previous ones to the Christian image of man, and even uses similar terminology. They talk about the freedom and autonomy of man, about the need to be who you are, about self-realization, etc.
However, in such a psychology in which secular humanism prevails, the cult of man himself is first of all established. It knows no boundaries or the supernatural,
and the Christian message, if combined with such psychology, runs the risk of turning into ordinary humanism devoid of any supernatural dimension.
The distinguished American scientist Paul C. Vitz, a psychologist himself, in this exceptional work provides a perceptive analysis of modern psychology, condemning its self-adoring, narcissistic and destructive character.
