Summary

Jean-Marie Robin: Being in the presence of another

Gestalt therapy as a situation

Jean-Marie Robin is one of the most prominent contemporary Gestalt psychotherapists and didacticians. The book is a collection of essays and transcriptions from the lectures of this encyclopedically educated author, which combines his texts published in the books Appearing as a Circumstance for Others and Social Change begins in two with several new chapters.

The book is intended for educators and gestalt therapists, but also for psychotherapists of other orientations and readers interested in a phenomenological or aesthetic approach to gestalt therapy. Referring to numerous references, starting from ancient philosophers, through psychoanalysts, phenomenologically oriented philosophers, existentialists, and constantly looking back on the circumstances in which gestalt therapy was developed, the author offers us a lot of information with a "special warning" that they have a task to lead us to our own authentic reflection and experience of the practice of a gestalt therapist.

The therapist's role is not limited to the therapeutic relationship and exchanges in the therapy room, and Robin also points to the connection between society and psychotherapy, emphasizing that psychotherapy can contribute to social changes even when it is done in the intimacy of a therapeutic setting. Constantly reminding us with his own example that whatever he does during the session "a gestalt therapist is always at the service of his client", and through personal examples from educations and sessions, Robin reveals himself to us as an author, a gestalt therapist and a man who deservedly bears the title of one of the greatest living didacticians and theorists of gestalt therapy.
