Summary

Nikolaj Berdjaev: Man and Machine

Selected essays and articles The order in which Berdjaev's essays and articles are printed in this book has been adapted, as far as possible, to the time of their creation, but also to the requirement of thematic connection. The goal was to enable the reader to follow the development of Nikolay Berdjaev's thoughts and interests during his fifty years of journalistic activity, but also to achieve some kind of thematic and organic unity of the book through several smaller units, which can be easily recognized in the book. Of course, it was not possible to fully realize this intention. Whenever it was necessary, the organizer consciously deviated from chronology and gave priority to the topic. The organizer finds justification for this procedure in the belief that following only one of the principles of grouping, chronological or thematic, would only increase the already inevitable shortcomings of this choice. Namely, Nikolay Berdyaev wrote and published over three hundred thematically very diverse, but qualitatively very uniform, essays and articles during his creatively extremely fruitful life. A complete bibliography of Nikolay Berdyaev's works will be given in the supplementary Volume 1 of Selected Works entitled For and Against Nikolay Berdyaev, which is why the publisher did not give the titles of the essays and articles in the original, the time of their publication, and the names of the magazines and newspapers in which they were published.
