This work belongs to the group of classic works of critical Russian church historiography in which Russian church history is presented systematically and comprehensively. It rests on the tradition of the pre-revolutionary Russian school of church history from which the author himself came. This tradition consists, first of all, of the multi-volume systematic Russian church histories of Metropolitan Makari (Bulgakov), Evgenij Evsignyevich Golubinski, Alexander Pavlovich Dobroklonski. The mentioned works were created in the 19th century.
