Summary
Mircea Eliade: Shamanism and archaic techniques of ecstasy
Besides the history of religion and yoga, Shamanism is the third major area of Eliade's research. The result is the first and so far the only synthetic presentation of this phenomenon on a global scale. Shamanism is based on psychophysical dualism, on the understanding that the soul can leave the body for a certain period of time without this having a fatal effect on the human individual. On the other hand, shamanism implies a split in the bosom of the sacred, which means, along with good, the appearance of evil spirits and thus the need to protect the community from them. The shaman is the one who, through a very complex and difficult initiation, acquires a gift and skill efficient enough to protect the community he belongs to from all evils. He is not a priest in the true sense of the word, just as shamanism is not a special form of religion; if that were the case, then wherever he meets (and he meets on all continents) he would carry with him the same image of the world, which is not the case.
