Summary
Pavel Florenski: The pillar and fortress of truth I-II
Review of Orthodox theodicy in 12 letters
"Living religious experience, as the only justified process of learning about dogma" - this is how I would like to express the general tendency of my book, or more precisely, of my sketches, written at various times and in various moods. Only by relying on immediate experience can the spiritual treasures of the Church be seen. Only by going over the ancient lines with a wet sponge can you wash them with living water and make out the letters of church literacy. Church hermits are alive for the living and dead for the dead. For a darkened soul, the faces of the pleasant ones darken, for a stiff soul - their bodies petrify in a terrible immobility. Is it not certain that hysterical women and the possessed fear them? And doesn't sin in front of the Church lead one to look at it with trepidation and mistrust? But the pure eyes see the figures of the pleasers as before, shining "like the face of an angel". For a purified heart, they are as accommodating as before, as in the olden days they shout and invite those who have ears to hear. I wonder: why does the pure unhappiness of the people spontaneously gravitate towards these righteous people? Why in them does the people find comfort in their suffering and the joy of forgiveness and the beauty of the heavenly feast? I'm not fooling myself. I know very well that I lit myself with no more than wood chips or a cheap candle made of yellow wax. But even this flame, flickering in unaccustomed hands, sparkled with billions of flashes in the treasury of St. Church." - To the reader (introductory part)
