Summary
Ruth Barcan: Golo / nago
When it comes to nudity, there are two established, completely opposite reactions: we see it as an expression of perversion and/or a state of innocence. Why is our reaction to nudity so contradictory and why do we treat it completely differently in different contexts?
Relying on popular culture, literature, philosophy, religion and first-hand conversations to answer this complicated question, university professor Ruth Barcan also did not hesitate to talk to nudists, strippers, artists, pornography experts and coroners.
Focusing on contemporary Australian society, not forgetting other cultures, present and past, the author will point out many contradictions in the concept of nudity, of which normal/abnormal, natural/unnatural, innocent/perverse, flawed/complete are just a few. It will examine the symbolism of the body, nudity and clothing as metaphors, the Judeo-Christian understanding of the moral implications of nudity, as well as its position in consumer culture.
Throwing light on a topic that has been ignored for centuries despite its unquestionable ability to shock and entertain us at the same time, the book "Nude/Nude" is a mixture of insightful insights and philosophical questions about this most (un)natural state of nature.
