Summary
Douglas Rushkoff: Extortion: why do we listen to what THEY tell us?
Based on scientific knowledge and his own rich experience gained during the years when he worked as a new media consultant with numerous leading companies today, Douglas Rushkoff explains in simple language which methods and how they are applied for the purpose of manipulating people in modern society. Starting from the procedures used in stores to force customers to buy a product, Rushkoff also exposes the effect of marketing in politics and public life and the ways in which the media influence the formation of our opinion. The pithy language, and Rushkoff's clear argumentation supported by plenty of examples, make this book a very desirable read, especially appreciated among the younger audience. The message of the book is positive and in any case aimed at people who want to live actively and participate, without cynicism, in an open global society.
The book "Extortion" received the "Marshal McLuhan" award in 2002 for the best book on the media.
