Summary
Irena Martinović Klarić: Chromosome Y and the search for a new homeland
This book is a unique written document about the Bajas and one of the few contemporary scientific documents about the Roma based on original anthropological and genetic research conducted in Croatia. In her very interesting style, the author guides us through the basics of the structure, evolution and phylogenetics of the "male" Y chromosome, but also through the practical challenges that accompany the organization and implementation of field research. From the book, we also learn what and how the Bajaj, and generally Roma, paternal gene stock is shaped. In the last, very lucid chapter, the relationship between genetics and identity is discussed and it is emphasized that the genetic identity of contemporary Roma reflects the stepmotherly relationship of Europe towards this exiled Asian people in search of a new homeland and the defense mechanisms that this people adopted and improved in order to survive.
