Ralston Saul John

Summary

John Saul Ralston: Unconscious Civilization

John Ralston Saul, born in 1947, is a Canadian theorist, essayist and novelist. After the publication of the study "Voltaire's Bastards" on the "dictatorship of reason in the West" in 1992, it became known outside of Canada (the book was translated into numerous languages, including Russian, French, Japanese, Spanish, etc.).

In the book "Unconscious Civilization", published in 1995 (translated into German as: "The market eats its children. Against the economization of society"), it is sovereignly stated that our society it is only superficially based on the individual and democracy. It is increasingly conformist and corporatist, a society in which legitimacy depends on specialists or interest groups and where decisions are made in their mutual negotiations. The paradox of our situation lies in the fact that knowledge has not made us aware. We, on the contrary, seek refuge in a world of illusions where language is cut off from reality. Reconnecting language with reality, clarifying what we mean by individualism and democracy, making these realities crucial to the life of the citizen, identifying ideologies in order to establish control over them, are among the first elements of the balance that Saul proposes in this book. A significant contribution to the persuasive theses in "Unconscious Civilization" was made by Saul's experience, which he gained as the head of an investment company in Paris and in his work at an oil company in Canada. The book was awarded the most prestigious Canadian award for theoretical literature (Governor General's Literary Award) in 1996, and two years later Saul received the Gordon Montador Award for the best book on contemporary social issues.
