Summary
Jose van Dijck: Mediated memories in the digital age
In seven chapters, the author offered elements for understanding cultural memory, why and how important it is, and what it means in an era of technological, social and cultural transformation. She started from a practical problem – organizing a shoebox full of memorabilia – and gently turned it into an academic inquiry that raises serious epistemological, ontological and pragmatic questions. This led to the creation of a theoretical model aimed at helping in the analysis of specific cases of cultural memory. The author points out that she has no illusions that this book will provide definitive answers to all these questions. It is only a modest proposal for reshaping the meaning of cultural memory that changes in the time of transition, as well as for connecting numerous viewpoints of different disciplines to discover new perspectives on this fascinating topic.
