Summary

On the other side of the border

Edited by: Ugo Bardi, Carlos Alvarez Pereira

The collection of papers "Across the border" was created on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the book "The Limits of Growth" (1972), in which a team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studied the way humans exploit the Earth's resources. The report, which fundamentally changed the way we look at humanity's impact on the planet, was commissioned by the Club of Rome. It shook the world, reminding us that we live on a planet with limited resources, and then decisively brought us back to the present and soberly set our sights on the future. In the book "On the other side of the border", the members of the Club of Rome warn, 50 years later, the decision-makers at the global level that half a century of precious time has been lost. The authors of the papers ask the questions: has humanity really adopted the lessons from "The Limits to Growth"? What have we learned in the meantime? What can we do now? Is there a way to avoid falling? The guiding idea of all the works is to provide guidance on how to mitigate the consequences of the inevitable transition to a sustainable world. The future is not a predetermined map, but a path that we discover as we walk along it.
