Summary
Bojan Bilić, Marija Radoman: Sisterhood and Unity
(Post)Yugoslav Lesbian Activism
The collection Sisterhood and Unity interweaves academic and activist voices to shed light on more than three decades of lesbian activism in the (post)Yugoslav space. Contributions rich in empirical material point to a number of lesbian initiatives and the important - but rarely recognized - role that lesbian activists played in the articulation of a feminist response to the rise of nationalism, widespread violence against women, and lesbian/homophobia in all post-Yugoslav states. Offering an intergenerational and transnational perspective, this book not only focuses on an extremely marginalized part of society, but also represents a pioneering effort in documenting lesbian activist engagement in a (post)war and (post)socialist environment. Through a multitude of author's points of view, Sisterhood and Unity begins to fill the gap about lesbian activist endeavors and lesbian lives in the literature dedicated to Yugoslavia and its tragic disintegration.
