Roland Barthes, French literary theorist, philosopher, literary critic, key figure of French semiology and structuralism from the 1950s to the 1970s. He exerted a strong influence on the development of structuralism, semiotics, existentialism, Marxism, anthropology and poststructuralism. As a semiologist and essayist, he developed a unique critical thought, in constant dialogue with the pluralism of theoretical discourses and intellectual movements of his time.
