Summary
Sergej Averintsev: Rhetoric and sources of the European literary tradition
"Rhetoric and sources of the European literary tradition" is a collection dedicated to topics that were important to the author: rhetoric and rationalism, literature in different cultural epochs, the connection between the culture of thought and the culture of words, as well as between rhetorical reflection and the reality of literary practice. Also, the theme of this book can be defined as thinking about the "Mediterranean soil" of Christian Europe as a synthesis of two principles - ancient and biblical, their complex intersections and mutual influences in Byzantium and Western Europe. This synthesis saw its end in the new age, but (Averintsev speaks only of rhetoric, although, it seems, we can consider his "rhetoric" as a symbol of Europe as a whole) "it is not quite the end, simply because we found ourselves in a post-rhetorical state of culture because rhetoric did not disappear, did not cease to exist, but was only "taken off" (aufgehoben in the Hegelian sense of the word), because the reflection discovered by the sophists and which shocked not only Aristophanes, remains forever with us, as our destiny and our achievements".
