It's amazing how the facts about book publishing remain the same despite changes in staff and ownership in publishing houses. It doesn't matter how many, even the big ones, merge into huge houses because, as always, new small publishers are born and some of them grow. Regardless of whether the ultimate owners of publishers are American, British, Australian, Canadian, German, or Japanese, regardless of whether they are media conglomerates or Wall Street stockbrokers or even liquor manufacturers, they must still employ the same types of editors who will choose to buy the same types of popular books from authors who know how to tell good stories. And regardless of how powerful, coldly businesslike and dominant bookstore chains appear to be successful, they still need to be led by managers and salespeople who love books...
