Vjenceslav Novak: The Last Stipančići
Vjenceslav Novak (Senj, 1859 - Zagreb, 1905) is one of the most important representatives of Croatian realism, and because of his objective narration and approach to the subject, he was called the Croatian Balzac. Novak began his literary career with Hajduk-Turkish novels, which contained distinct romantic features. After that, he wrote native novellas from life in Podgorica and Senj that were realistically shaped, and in the short stories Iz Velegradsko podzemlja (1905) and U glib (1901) he described the world of the disenfranchised and the poor. The Last Stipančići, a novel about the decline of the Senj patricians in the first half of the 19th century, is considered the best novel of Croatian realism. The drama of the Stipančić family has its own socio-economic and political framework. It is one of a number of similar ones in the area of our coastal cities, where old noble families are falling apart and new, bourgeois ones are rising, which are better adapted to new social circumstances. When a child is invited from his mother's arms by an aunt or godfather, he does not give in. But when the aunt shows the doll, it willingly holds out its hands to her. For such a price, the child will go to the godfather and anyone, so who will tell him that it is broken or that it has no meaning? And our people are children that the government willfully detained so that they don't develop into independent and mature people. That's why they don't care about what is sacred to others, that's why they take pride in what others are ashamed of.
